What are real nappies?

Real nappies are nappies that are washable and reusable. Our nappies  consist of four parts -

1) A flushable, biodegradable paper liner, which holds all solids

2) A bamboo "booster" insert which increases absorbency (comes with the nappy)

3) The bamboo nappy itself, which is pre-formed, and attaches with velcro straps, just like a disposable nappy

4) A PU waterproof outer wrap, again pre-formed and attached with velcro straps

Why should I use real nappies?

- Economic reasons - over 2.5 years, you save up to 30% of the cost of disposables for the first baby, and up to 80% for subsequent babies

- Environmental reasons- disposable nappies create an enormous anmount of waste for landfill sites, and take over a century, possibly as much as 500 years to degrade.

-Real nappies contain no chemicals and allow baby's skin to breathe

Are real nappies difficult to use?

Modern re-usable nappies are nothing like the old folding terry squares with pins used in the past. - it takes only about 30 seconds more to put on a re-usable nappy than a disposable one. You just insert the liner and booster in the nappy, put the nappy on as you would a disposable, and put the wrap on top in exactly the same way. When taking off the used nappy, simply fold the liner over and flush it down the toilet, or in the waste-basket, and put the nappy in a bin with a sealing lid, until the next wash. And no, provided you use a decent bin that closes well, these will not smell - any solids will be long gone. The wraps can be aired and re-used several times before being washed.

How many nappies will I need?

Our real nappies come in two sizes - size 1 (4-10kg) and size 2 (9-20kg). If you intend to use real nappies exclusively, we suggest 20 size 1 nappies and 15-20 size 2 nappies. All nappies come with a booster, so you will only need extra boosters if your baby is a heavy wetter and you want to use a double booster. In addition you will need wraps. Our wraps come in 4 sizes - S (3-6 kg), M (5-10kg), L (9-16kg) and XL (15+kg). You will need 5-6 S/M wraps and 5-6 L/XL wraps (total 10-12 wraps). Finally, you will need the paper rolls - a pack of 3 rolls will last about 2 months.

My baby is a heavy wetter - will I have problems with leaks?

Provided you change your baby regularly (which you should be doing anyway!), you should have no problems with leaks. If your baby is a heavy wetter (as ours is), you can use two boosters for added absorbency - we do at night.

How do I wash the nappies

Just like a normal wash - 40 degrees is enough. Use a small amount of powder only - not liquid, and no softener. You can tumble dry the nappies, but it is more environmentally friendly not to.

Will my baby get more frequent nappy rash by using real nappies?

No it will not - this is one of the most frequent myths surrounding washable nappies. Having said that, it is important that you change your baby regularly to avoid nappy rash - whether you use re-usable, or disposable nappies, and is particularly important if you are using re-usables. It is also a sign of good parenting!
